What’s In Your Carry-On Bag? Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon, Founder of JetSetSarah.com
Last year, I took 34 flights and flew 73,000 miles for my job as a travel content creator. So I like to think I know a thing or two about packing! Whether I’m jetting to the Caribbean or headed to further-flung destinations, here are the items I never leave home without.
Away Bigger Carry-On, Aluminum Edition
I was in the market for an aluminum carry-on and did months of research, road testing models from Away and Arlo Skye for What to Pack. In the end I loved the Away so much I bought it myself and I couldn’t be happier. It cost roughly half the price of a Rimowa or Tumi but is really sturdy and totally stylish. I appreciate the onboard charger, of course. But what I’m loving most is collecting destination stickers I can slap on it to show off where I’ve been.
Takeya Water Bottle
If you board early it can be almost an hour before you’re airborne and the beverage cart finally makes its way to your seat. So I always travel with a reusable water bottle, which I fill with the drink of my choice post-Security and then sip from to my heart’s content while I’m in flight. After weeks of research I picked this 18-ounce Takeya bottle, which holds enough to last me a three-hour flight and absolutely does. not. leak.
DJI Osmo Pocket
I don’t just write about the places I go, I take videos of them, too. My newest production tool is this tiny gimbal, which records crisp video that, because of its internal stabilizer, is never shaky. I run (and write about) a lot of destination races, so I’m excited to use this one to shoot on the fly during my next one.
Kindle Paperwhite
I love to read but never find the time to unless I’m on a plane. My Kindle Paperwhite holds all my books (including the one I’m always rushing to finish before my monthly book club meeting) and has a glare-free screen for when I’m hanging by the pool (aka “research”).

The Daily Edited Travel Case
A transparent sandwich baggie, though inexpensive and easily available, isn’t designed to withstand the rigors of frequent travel. I’m a fan of more substantial TSA-approved totes, and always have my “go bag” packed and ready to jet. The Daily Edited’s clear travel case is a bit of a splurge, but if you’re a frequent flyer, I guarantee its features (monogrammable leather trim and two zippered compartments) are worth every penny.
Palette by Pak
In the last year I’ve committed to a pricey-but-effective skincare regimen that involves multiple products. With this handy palette of silicone pots I can decant up to a week’s supply of my holy grail cleansers, serums, and lotions (shout out to all the Sunday Riley Good Genes fans!) and still have room in my toiletry bag.

Shiseido Controlled Chaos Mascara
This bold mascara kept popping up on my Insta feed last summer and I had to have it. Now I wear it almost daily, usually paired with turquoise eyeliner (because when I commit to color, I really commit).
FreshMe Sleep Mask
You know how there’s always that person on an early-morning or night flight who refuses to pull down the window blind and then usually falls asleep? You, too, can fall asleep, when you wear this super-soft mask that not only blocks light but also covers your ears and muffles sound. I look a bit like a hostage when I’m wearing it, but my well-rested self does not care.
Mott 50 Kelly Swimsuit
I always travel with a swimsuit in my hand luggage because if my room isn’t ready when I get to the resort, I want to be able to take a dip while I wait. And since I’m in the islands an average of three times a month, all that sun really adds up. My hack: I protect my skin in a variety of rashguards and long-sleeved swimsuits. This adorable avocado-print number is one of my favorites for coverage, support, and all-around cuteness.
Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen
Contrary to popular belief, black does crack, and I’m determined not to look any older than necessary. Number one in my “fountain of youth” arsenal is liberal daily application of this reef-safe silicone-based sunscreen, which makes my skin feel like velvet and doesn’t leave a white or gray cast on my chocolate skin.
Foot Hammock
I’m less than five-foot tall so my feet rarely touch the floor when I’m sitting in an airplane seat. That’s no biggie on short flights, but when I’m jetting long haul, my dangling feet can swell and hurt. This nifty adjustable foot hammock solves the problem, attaching to the tray table of the seat in front of me and allowing me to keep my feet comfortably elevated and supported. It (almost) makes my coach seat feel like first class!

Lanolips The Original 101 Ointment
I’ve always had dry lips but this Aussie salve, which I discovered on a work trip Down Under a few years ago, has been a godsend. It’s thick and moisturizing but not greasy, and unlike other lip lubes I’ve tried, stays put on your lips for hours. Bonus: It’s great for dry cuticles, too.
Altra Escalante Racer Running Shoes
I believe there’s no better way to see a destination than by running through it, so I always hit the road when I’m on a trip. These Altras, which fit my wide feet perfectly, have been in my rotation for a couple of years now and handle beaches, gravel trails and airport concourses equally well.
